What Is Footbag?
Footbag is a modern American sport. It was invented in 1972 in Oregon City, Oregon, when John Stalberger met Mike Marshall, who had been kicking around a hand-made bean bag. John had recently had knee surgery and was looking for a way to work on his flexibility, and he instantly took to the game and become good friends with Marshall. They called the game, "Hack the Sack."
Is footbag a sport?
Yes! Competitive footbag is governed by the International Footbag Players' Association, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization with the current board members spread around the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
Are there footbag competitions?
The competative versions of footbag include footbag freestyle and footbag net. Footbag freestyle is the art of performing footbag related movements in a performance setting. Freestyle events include routines, single trick, trick combinations, circle competition, and more. Footbag net involves a version of footbag play similar to volley ball where players try and land the footbag on an opponents court space. Court spaces are separated by a net, similar to a volley ball net.
